Hear the Rumble of the Oklahoma City Thunder
In 2007 after a dispute with Seattle lawmakers, the Seattle Supersonics became the Oklahoma City Thunder. They were granted permission to move by the NBA after the New Orleans Hornets spent two seasons there, proving that Oklahoma City could support a professional basketball team.
When negotiating the move, the owners of the team agreed to leave the team name and colors in Seattle, but were allowed to take the championship banners and trophies from the 41 years they played in Seattle.
The logo and colors of the Oklahoma City Thunder were taken from a mix of other teams in the area. In 2008, they picked the colors light blue, orange, navy, gold, and white. The logo is a shield with a basketball on it and the team’s initials, OKC.
Cheering the team on is their mascot, Rumble the Bison. This legendary bison with powers and abilities beyond any normal bison has found a home with the Oklahoma City Thunder and was voted mascot of the year in 2009, just six months after his debut. Of course, accompanying Rumble in cheering on the Thunder is the dance team, the Thunder Girls who appear at home games, performing their fabulous dance routines for the fans.
Despite the short time the team has been in the area, the Oklahoma City Thunder has become an asset, helping those less fortunate than themselves on a regular basis. Periodically, players have taken families on shopping sprees, assisting with groceries and other supplies that the family might otherwise have problems purchasing.
They are very active in promoting youth fitness, hosting basketball camps and fitness clinics. Education is also a priority prompting the Rolling Thunder book bus, which has already handed out more than 15,000 books to area children, and the Read to Achieve program.
With seating for more than 18,000, the Chesapeake Energy Arena, also known as Loud City, is home to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Currently, the stadium is under renovations that will cost more than 100 million dollars and should be complete after the 2009-2010 NBA season. Funded by a temporary tax increase, which was overwhelmingly approved by voters, the arena improvements will add a new entrance, atrium, concession stands, and more.
Oklahoma City Thunder basketball games are exciting and energetic. With the entertainment of the Thunder Girls and Rumble, and the energy and spirit of the fans, you can’t help but enjoy a Thunder game.
